Annointing of the Sick

Through the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, the entire Church asks God to lighten your sufferings, forgive your sins and bring you to eternal salvation.

Like all sacraments, the Anointing of the Sick takes place in the presence of the community, as the Body of Christ, who gather in faith to pray over and lay hands on those who are sick. In this way the Church, like Christ, seeks the health of the whole human person.

The care of the sick and elderly is always a loving concern to the entire Christian community. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick proclaims and makes real the healing and gentle love of Christ. It is available for those who are seriously ill, aged, infirmed, or facing an operation.

As a parish community, we want to reach out to and include the sick, the elderly and the homebound in the life and prayers of our parish.

Please contact the Parish Office (973) 427-1478 regarding any member of your household who is ill, confined at home or in the hospital and who would like to be visited and anointed by one of our parish priests or place on our parish prayer list.

The elderly and those among us who, through sickness or disability, are not able to worship with us on Sundays are visited weekly or monthly by a Extraordinary Minster of the Eucharistic.

Visiting time is arranged each week by a call from the minister who is assigned through Deacon Tony as part of the Bethany Ministry in the Office of Pastoral Ministries. During your hospitalization, if you notify the floor nurse, a chaplain will visit and arrange for or bring the Eucharist to you, each day.

Please keep in mind when someone is seriously advanced in their illness, a priest should be called to administer the Sacrament of Anointing as soon as possible.

As they make their final preparation to meet our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, your loved ones should be given the opportunity to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation (confession) and Eucharist (communion) along with the Sacrament of Anointing.

It is best to set up this visit while your loved one is aware of his/her surroundings and can respond to the priest directly.
